Autumn Allure

I found this gallery of stationary for fall in the Guardian. It´s like that quote from the film "You´ve got mail" with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks where he woos her with talk of bouquets of freshly sharpened pencils in the fall or some such thing. I whole-heartedly embrace this spirit of new beginnings, and last week I gave in to this life long (or at least since I was about seven) conviction that the year actually starts in August, and bought myself a school calendar. It´s very well laid out too, with plenty of space for notes and to-do-lists.

Never having cared much for pencils, I have, however, newly opened a fresh bottle of black ink and bought myself a new desk lamp, coincidentally named Newport, like the town where we just happened to spend what was possibly the best days of summer vacation. Add a few fresh notebooks to that and I´m ready for the cold months!

  1. I think you are the only one I know that has a paper calendar. :-) I agree that it is practical to have everything in the smart phone and/or computer but I still like looking at things on paper. My mind often works better that way. We bought a printer this week so now I can work properly on my German and actually make notes when I read something.

    1. I´m afraid I still hang on to my very un-smart Nokia 3310. Having a calendar that depends on battery life would make me nervous. Working texts in the computer or on a reading tablet only is something I have gotten used to, though. But almost every writing person I know still uses lots of paper. And I have never been able to transfer my diary to the computer - there is some connection between thinking and having a pen in my hand that just goes together, like coffee and milk.

  2. i have a non-smart phone and a calendar that fits in my purse.

my husband uses fountain pens, so there are always ink bottles around here, but i'm a fan of the pencil. i like thick-lead mechanical pencils and have several different kinds. i have a frequent need to erase, so pens just don't cut it for me lol

    1. I love the fountain pen & black ink for the wonderful contrast. No other pen writes as black on white paper as it does, something I appreciate more as I´m getting old and dim-sighted. And no other pen is so easy on the hand.

The husband is a pencil writer. He picks them up everywhere, those plastic advertising pens, and they are all over the house. Thousands, I´m sure.

Some people seem not to keep any writing material at home. I once saw a neighbour put up a note on his door, written on a torn old envelope, and fastened with two Band-Aids!
